Compact UV medium pressure lamps preserve the ecological equilibrium in oceans

UV lamps of Heraeus Noblelight in a sterilization plant of ballast water (openPR) - Heraeus presented compact, high performance medium pressure UV lamps on the fair AQUATECH of 26. until 29 September in Amsterdam, which is inserted with the treatment by ballast water on ships. In the expanding international navigation by ballast water regularly organisms are taken up and registered to stranger of ecological systems. There these affect then frequently the ecological equilibrium. These organisms can be killed by means of UV disinfection on ships.

High performance UV medium pressure lamps offer a high irradiance, which makes a very high UV for dose possible. Sterilization plants can be very compactly built with extremely high flow rates. First Pilotanlagen with UV medium pressure lamps for the treatment of ballast water on ships were realized by different plant farmers already and are at present in the test operation.

Approximately 10 billion tons ballast water provide annually world-wide on the ships for a stable situation, estimate the international Seefahrts¬organi¬sation IMO. Ballast water is taken up for the stabilization of sea-going vessels, in order to receive the sea-fitness during empty travels, travels with little freight or with unevenly distributed full loading. The water is taken up to own ballast tanks for water ballast or to the cavity between double Bordwänden of the hull.
However also regularly tiny organisms are taken up such as Plankton, eddyless animals, fish larvae and pathogens and kidnapped by ballast water to stranger of ecological systems. Thus an asiatic kind of shell in large number was e.g. spent to south and North American west coast. They have there no natural enemies and to move the rivers upstream. By their Massen¬vermehrung they can clog and disturb also flow and power plants the entire ecological system.

Micro organisms as the mentioned can be killed by means of UV disinfection on ships.
Ultraviolet light has an intensive bactericidal effect. UVC radiation inactivates micro organisms such as viruses and bacteria without the additive of chemicals. Develop no chemical arrears, which become Keimzahl in the water and pathogen reliably reduced. The physical method of the disinfection with UVC light is a reliable, pollution free and economic technology, which already worked with the dressing of drinking water, waste water and industrial process water. The UV disinfection and oxidation is a pollution free method for the dressing of water. The UV disinfection is used frequently into multi-stage processes into combination with conventional processes.

The manufacturer of special sources of light pointed to the AQUATECH UV lamps, which are inserted during the drinking water sterilization in water companies, during the waste water treatment into purification plants as well as with the dressing by industrial process water. In addition UVC lamps, compact high performance medium pressure UV lamps as well as Goldspot amalgam lamps count low pressure. The broad product range offers the suitable lamp for each application.

Since the development to the UV medium pressure emitter technology in the year 1904 by Richard Küch with Heraeus, Heraeus Noblelight looks on one more than 100-jährige experience in the development, production and use of UV lamps back. By innovations like the development of the Longlife technology Heraeus sets again and again milestones in the lamp technology. Heraeus Noblelight is original equipment manufacturer and preferential partner of equipment manufacturers for the disinfection of water, air and surfaces as well as for photochemistry and photo oxidation.
